Could 2023 be the vintage of a lifetime? 💎🍷 For Napa Cabernet, maybe so.

According to Decanter's Napa Valley correspondent Jonathan Cristaldi , the slew of acclaimed wines from this vintage has marked 2023 as “a star-studded crop for the ages”.

Following abundant winter rains, a long, cool growing season and a harvest free from extreme heat or wet weather, the wines display exceptional elegance and structure.

Cristaldi's 2023 standouts include wines from Louis M. Martini, Continuum, Opus One, Harlan Estate, Beaulieu Vineyard, AXR and Rombauer, to name but a few.

Described as a vintage for collectors that is equally rewarding in its youth, 2023 reflects the balance, finesse and precision shaping the new generation of Napa Cabs.

Napa’s mountain wine 🍷⛰️ Mayacamas Vineyards

During her California wine travels, Ellen McNair () from Liberty Wines couldn’t miss a visit to Mayacamas Vineyards, one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates.

Founded in 1889 on the south face of Mount Veeder, the winery is built from hand-cut stones and its elevated vineyards, largely dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, reach 2,400 feet above sea level.

“To taste Mayacamas is not to taste Napa as you know it,” writes Ellen. “These are mountain wines through and through, with a precision and elegance you can only really achieve at high elevations.”

Exclusive! 👀🍷 Take a first look inside the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery following its major 3-year transformation.

Known as the first California winery to treat wine like fine art, this legendary Rutherford estate was originally founded in 1966, and has helped put Napa on the world wine map.

Now, 60 years on, its doors have reopened to visitors after an epic restoration, revealing a reimagined icon. Here’s what we saw:

Q: What is it called when grapes change colour? 🍇
A: Véraison! One of the growing season's most colourful milestones.

Hard green berries begin to soften as red wine grapes gradually turn shades of pink, red and indigo, while white wine grapes become more yellow and translucent.

Depending on the vintage and variety, California’s warmer inland vineyards are usually the first to see the grapes transform. But even within one subregion there can be several weeks’ difference between appellations.

Take the North Coast, for example, where véraison can begin as early as mid-July in Napa Valley’s warmer AVAs, such as Calistoga or Oakville, compared to Sonoma’s cooler, Pacific-influenced AVAs, like Carneros and the Sonoma Coast, where it might not arrive until mid-August.

Autonomous robots are being piloted in the vineyards of Certified B Corp Bonterra in Mendocino to help manage fungal disease using UV-C light.

💡 UV-C light targets fungal spores before they spread, while the fully electric robots help reduce carbon emissions – a smart combination for more sustainable winegrowing.
