Have you heard of the One Block Challenge? 🍇🌎 A The Regenerative Viticulture Foundation experiment that started in Paso Robles is on a mission to change the w**e world.

Starting small, the One Block Challenge invites w**egrowers to test regenerative practices on a single parcel. Together, the cohorts share their results, building a community of knowledge and support.

What began in Paso Robles in January 2025 with 46 growers, pioneered by Robert Hall W**ery, has now become a worldwide movement, spanning Europe, New Zealand, South America and South Africa.

California continues to lead the way, with producers across the state joining the challenge, including Crocker & Starr W**ery in Napa Valley and The Donum Estate in Sonoma who have hosted regional Field Days.

From the 1860s to the 2026 harvest 🍇 That’s the story behind these young Cabernet Sauvignon vines at Matthiasson W**es’s Phoenix Vineyard, nestled at the base of Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley.

W**emaker, viticulturist and organic farmer Steve Matthiasson gives a sneak peek at the first Cabernet pick of 2026, harvested in mid-August – his earliest Cab harvest on record.

1. Hirsch Vineyards West Ridge Pinot Noir – Hirsch’s lightest-bodied Pinot Noir, with ethereal aromatics, delicate red fruit and fine tannins.

2. Littorai Mays Canyon Pinot Noir – A fog-cooled Pinot with fresh floral and cherry notes, supple texture and savoury depth.

3. Birichino Besson Old Vine Grenache – From old vines in California’s Central Coast, this bright, juicy Grenache brings fresh red fruit, lively acidity and a beautifully light feel.

4. A Tribute to Grace W**e Company Santa Barbara Highlands Grenache – Grown at 3,500 feet, this elegant Grenache brings lifted red fruit, spice and savoury detail.

5. J. Lohr Vineyards & W**es Wildflower Valdiguié – A light-bodied Monterey red bursting with raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate, with bright acidity and a juicy finish.

Harvest starts before sunrise 🌌🍇 Here are three reasons why picking crews are setting their alarms (extra) early:

1. Cooler grapes, fresher fruit – Lower predawn temperatures keep the grapes in pristine condition, preserving freshness and delicate flavours.

2. Energy saving – Night harvesting requires less energy for refrigerating freshly picked grapes, lowering the environmental impact.

3. Beat the heat – Cool conditions are more comfortable for the labour intensive business of bringing in the harvest, especially when it’s done by hand!

For many producers, these early starts are also part of an earlier harvest overall in 2026, with some reporting it to be their earliest ever.
