Is this the world capital of regenerative vineyards? 🍇🌎 California is home to more Regenerative Organic Alliance Certified (ROC) wine estates than anywhere else – and five of them are found among the rolling, oak-studded hills of Paso Robles!

But what does it mean to be ROC? This certification recognises vineyards that go above and beyond – caring for the soil, safeguarding animals and ensuring the fair treatment of workers. It’s about leaving a positive mark on the planet while producing exceptional wines.

📷 Among Paso Robles’ ROC vineyards (pictured here), Tablas Creek Vineyard was the world’s first to earn the title in 2020! Followed by Booker Vineyard, Halter Ranch Vineyard, Robert Hall Winery and Villa Creek.

Have you heard of the ‘Judgment of Paris’? 🏆🍷 This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Paris Tasting – a watershed moment that changed the course of wine history.

Organised by the legendary Steven Spurrier, this historic event brought together the top to be judged blind against France’s finest from Bordeaux and Burgundy.

The outcome? Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the day – outscoring some of the greatest wines of the time and sending shockwaves around the wine world.

📷 Heitz Cellar shares this extraordinary lineup from wine collector Andy Wang, who spent 10 years assembling a complete collection of all the reds from the 1976 Paris Tasting!

Have you tasted any of these ‘Judgment of Paris’ wines?

Out with the old, in with the new 🍇✂️ Winter pruning is in full swing, with vineyard teams across California picking up their shears to trim back last year’s growth.

“This is our first opportunity to affect the balance of the vines going forward,” explains Cathy Corison, pioneering winegrower, winemaker and founder of Corison Winery in Napa Valley. “We are pruning to vigour and that means that we are trying to balance the vine; so weak positions will be able to produce less, and strong positions can do more.”

💡 Winter pruning allows the vines to focus their energy on producing the strongest, best-positioned shoots for the growing season. By shaping the vines and managing crop load, pruning improves fruit quality, airflow and overall vine health.

Award-winning sustainability 🏆 We're thrilled to share that the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance - CSWA has been awarded the 2026 V d’Or for Best Sustainability Initiative, recognising the Climate Action Toolkit – an open-source, science-based resource helping winegrowers and vintners assess climate risks and take action.

“This recognition reflects decades of collaboration across California’s wine community, grounded in planning and science and focused on preparedness and enduring stewardship,” said Allison Jordan, Alliance Executive Director.

California continues to lead the way in sustainable winegrowing, with 70% of vineyard area certified sustainable and over 90% of wine produced in certified wineries.

Sustainability isn’t a trend. It’s the future of wine. 🌱

What makes a 100-point wine? 💎🍷 Next up from Decanter’s 100-point wines of 2025, an “exceptional” mountain Cabernet from Napa Valley – the source of more wines on the list than any other appellation worldwide.

Lokoya Wines Cabernet Sauvignon, Spring Mountain 2022: “These vineyards are planted on ancient, ocean-bottom sedimentary soils that lend a distinct mineral character to the wines,” writes Decanter’s Napa wine critic, Jonathan Cristaldi.

“Fresh, bright, vivid–absolutely enticing–with remarkable layers of minerality running from graphite and underbrush to wet river stones and slate. On the palate, the wine is rich, full-bodied, and deeply layered, offering a cascade of dark black and red cherry fruit.”

Lokoya specialises in Cabernet from Napa’s mountain AVAs, where higher elevation vineyards sit on steep, well-drained terraces, experiencing dramatic day-to-night temperature shifts that shape wines of profound intensity and freshness.

What’s the “secret ingredient” to sustainably-grown wines? 🍷🌱

Compost, of course! At Littorai Wines in Sonoma, the recipe for vibrant wines starts with grape pomace, coffee grounds, garden clippings and other organic materials that create the nutrient-rich compost used for biodynamic preparations to give their vineyards a natural boost.

💡 Did you know a single handful of compost contains more microorganisms than there are humans on Earth? Billions of busy microbes break down the organic material, otherwise destined for landfill, into vital nutrients that the vines can readily absorb for healthy growth.

Keeping it in the family 🍇🍷 Did you know that the majority of Californian wineries are family owned? And many of them are multigenerational, too!

Napa Valley, the jewel of California’s AVAs, is comprised of around 95% family-owned wineries, some of them proudly standing among the world’s most iconic wine estates.

Meanwhile in historic regions like Lodi, home to pockets of centennial vineyards, there are producers led by the fifth, or even sixth, generations of winegrowers and winemakers.

If you’re looking to try more exciting wines crafted by family businesses this year, why not start your search with California?

What makes a 100-point wine? 💎🍷 We take a look at Decanter’s 100-point wines of 2025, focusing on “the largest single region for top scores” – California! And specifically, Napa Valley, which accounted for one-third of the perfect-score wines awarded globally.

First up, Cliff Lede Poetry Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District 2021: “Perfectly pure, precise, and balanced—a wine of striking honesty and grace and an absolute standout in the 2021 vintage,” writes Decanter’s Napa wine critic .

“One of Napa Valley’s genuine ‘grand cru’ sites” meets exceptional winemaking, delivering a more elegant style of Cabernet-led blend from an excellent vintage remembered for droughty conditions that produced low yields of phenomenal purity and intensity.

Can you believe this Napa vineyard was originally planted between 1880 and 1920? 🪾🍁 Winter looks good on old vines! When January is not so dry, California’s deep-rooted heritage vineyards can drink their fill of winter rains.

Replenishing the land with groundwater reserves is vital for dry-farmed vines, such as these gnarly beauties in Turley Wine Cellars’s St. Helena ‘Library Vineyard’, providing a natural source of moisture to see them through the drier summer months.

This year’s plentiful winter rains are already laying the foundation for an excellent vintage ahead, lowering the risk of severe water stress to deliver naturally balanced and vibrant fruit. The mustard flowers are thriving, too!

Thinking outside the box 🍷📦 Why are Ridge Vineyards ditching wooden wine boxes for their iconic Monte Bello wine this year?

💡 Packaging and transportation account for over 40% of the wine industry’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to International Wineries for Climate Action. That’s why, along with opting for lighter glass bottles, wineries like Ridge Vineyards are switching to sustainable alternatives.

Here’s why these new boxes are the full package:

♻️ 100% recycled cardboard
🫟 Water-based ink
🌱 Corn-based foam, soluble in water!

“This switch results in an average reduction of 50,000 pounds of shipping weight annually, cutting costs while lowering CO₂ emissions,” says Ridge.

What do you think of this sustainable innovation?
