Although the calendar still says August, we’ve reached the quarter pole of harvest. What do we know so far? Grenache is scarce and very early. But it appears that other grapes, including Syrah and Marsanne, are following a more typical path. What we've harvested so far looks outstanding. And we're likely in for some long days the next two weeks, after which we might get a little break.

In this week’s blog, Jason breaks down what we’ve learned. These photos illustrate some of the key takeaways.

Photos 1 & 2: A crushpad and sorting table full of this week's Grenache extravaganza. Yields have been down 50% from last year but it's showing deep colors and intense flavors.

Jason mentioned in his Instagram Live this week that every time he goes out into the vineyard to document what he’s seeing, he comes back with a phone full of Grenache photos. So, we’ve chosen five of our favorites and would love to know if any particularly speak to you!

Shoutout to this legend overseeing his 33rd harvest at Tablas Creek! That's every harvest we've ever had.⁠

Our first harvests were from 1994-1996, from the California-sourced clones we planted in 1992 while we were propagating, planting, and waiting for our Beaucastel clones to mature. We made those wines in space generously rented to us by a neighboring winery and labeled those wines under different names (shout out to anyone who can name them).⁠

Our first vintage labeled "Tablas Creek Vineyard" was 1997, when the plantings of our clones of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, Counoise, Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc from Beaucastel produced their first crop.⁠

We are wiping the slate clean in preparation for this year's harvest!

Every harvest, our cellar chalkboard keeps track of every pick, every block, every day. Clearing away last year's notes always feels like an important moment, giving us a clean slate (literally) for the 150+ lots we're expecting 2026 to bring!⁠

We just released a wine that we haven't made since 2021. And (apologies in advance) there are only 46 cases.

One of the most fun things we get to do at Tablas Creek is work with grapes that are among the rarest on Earth. And the rarest grape in our vineyard is Picardan. Once common in the Rhône Valley, it was pushed into decline in the mid-1800s by a powdery mildew epidemic, and barely survived phylloxera's arrival in the 1870s. Even now, there is just more than an acre in all of France, and when we planted our first half-acre block in 2013, we increased the world's total Picardan footprint by 40%.

Still, it's one of the 13 varieties allowed in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and in 2003 we imported it from our partners at Beaucastel. After three rounds of virus testing, it was finally released to us in 2010. We propagated it, planted it here in 2013, and harvested our first grapes in 2016. We didn't know what to expect, since it's so rare in France. But the wine is delicious, like a slightly more mineral and slightly less tropical Picpoul. It didn't take long before we were including Picardan in our trials for the Esprit de Tablas Blanc, and it made its first appearance there in 2017.

With only a half acre in the ground, and it being so good that the Esprit Blanc snaps up most of our production, it's been a while since we were able to bottle it as a varietal wine. But 2025 was a productive and high quality vintage, which allowed us to use Picardan in Esprit Blanc and still make a tiny (46 case) bottling.

The wine is crisp and fresh, featuring key lime and white grapefruit notes over a finish that shows salty minerality and bright citrus.

PS: We grafted over another half-acre last year and hope to have a little production off it this year, and more next. So even though it will remain rare, it hopefully won't be quite so scarce in the future!

A (gentle) plea to wineries about your websites.

Most winery websites are like the acquaintance at the party who can't stop talking about themselves. They're great at telling you what the winery does. And not so good at connecting visitors with the information they came there to find.
