Walking my dog along the streets of Mattapoisett I suddenly noticed bees—and there it is! White Snakeroot, Ageratina altissima, a wildflower that likes shade although here it’s definitely getting some direct sun.
It’s kind of shrub-like in that it will grow 3-5’ tall with a 2-4’ spread. It blooms from summer deep into fall and attracts tons of pollinators including bees (see video!), butterflies and moths.
It’s not only deer resistant but toxic to mammals.
White Snakeroot (once used to treat snakebite) spreads underground and by self-seeding, but it also settles in once established and makes a great garden plant.

Fall is a great time to plant climate wise. The air is cooler and the soil is warm, giving roots the conditions they need to grow without the stress of summer heat.
It’s also a great time to choose plants for the fall “look!”
One red maple may have red leaves while another may have leaves that turn yellow.
Also, now is a great time to see the red berries on chokeberries and winterberries, and the white, feathery seed heads on Groundsel Bush.
This time of year your eye may catch a plant you’d never even thought about.
