Flexamat tied concrete block mats provide permanent erosion control for applications where vegetation alone cannot survive the hydraulic shear forces.

The system consists of concrete blocks tied together in a flexible mat that conforms to grade changes and channel geometry. It is used for slope stabilization, channel lining, low-water crossings, and outlet protection, applications where Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles and seasonal flow variability demand a system with both hydraulic performance and structural durability.

Selecting the right stormwater solution is only part of the job. Then the project has to be built correctly in the field.

At Interfaceh2o, our involvement continues after the specification is written and the order is placed. We attend pre-construction meetings, coordinate deliveries, train installers, provide oversight during installation, inspect systems after they are in place, and troubleshoot when site conditions do not match the plan.

We do this work alongside engineers, contractors, and municipalities throughout the Michigan construction year, from fall stabilization and winter planning to spring mobilization and summer installation.

Stormwater filtration at the point of discharge is increasingly required under Michigan's water quality permit programs. For retrofit applications, the challenge is fitting an effective treatment system into an existing infrastructure footprint without major reconstruction.

Omni Block Project | System 8 + System 12

Why this project stands out:

This project puts the flexibility of the Omni Block insulated CMU system on full display, with both 8" and 12” blocks. The multi-layered CMU geometry accepts molded EPS inserts within the wall while preserving cells for required reinforcing and grout, creating a durable masonry wall system that delivers structure, insulation and architectural character together.

Two wall sizes: System 8 and System 12 are both incorporated on this project, giving the design team flexibility where wall thickness and structural needs change. Architectural masonry: Split-face and scored units show how Omni Block can be a finished design element, not something that has to be covered up. More finish options: Omni Block is designed as a stand-alone wall system and can be left exposed inside, outside or both. Units can also be integrally colored, burnished, split or scored. Built for demanding walls: System 12 adds another layer of masonry and another layer of insulation and can accommodate additional rebar and grout for commercial and institutional applications.

As environmental regulations become more stringent, it is increasingly important to incorporate Low Impact Development (LID) and Green Infrastructure (GI) management into project sites. To address this need, innovative methods have been developed that reduce the amount of hard surfaces, such as parking lots, walkways, and emergency access lanes, while protecting areas of environmental significance.

One of these methods is porous pavements, which are both easy to implement and cost-effective. By reducing impervious surfaces on-site, they help restore the natural water cycle and minimize the need for above-ground detention ponds and conveyance infrastructure. Similarly, low-maintenance solutions for stormwater diversion channels, roadside swales, and drainage ditches protect against erosion and overflow concerns.

Another effective solution is living green walls, which increase on-site vegetation and promote water filtration from higher elevations. These walls also offer the added benefit of providing access to more valuable land.

Inlet protection is one of the most commonly cited deficiencies on construction site stormwater inspections. The issue is not always that contractors skip it. Often, it is that the product selected does not perform under the site's actual conditions.
