She's ready! 💀🌸🏵

We turned a plain resin skull from Dollarama into our Catrina — the centerpiece of our Día de Mu***os market table and our home decoration. Black eyes ringed with marigolds, magenta roses, hearts on her temples. She's not spooky. She was never meant to be.

La Catrina was born more than a hundred years ago from the etching of José Guadalupe Posada. He drew her as a satire of Mexico's upper class — the "catrinas" who wore fancy European hats and acted above everyone else. Underneath the feathers and finery, Posada's message was simple: we are all skeletons. Death doesn't care about your money or your manners.

Diego Rivera later painted her into his famous mural, gave her a full body and a proud stance, and she became the elegant lady of death herself.

That's the heart of Día de Mu***os. Death isn't something to fear or hide from — we dress her up, we laugh with her, we set a place at the table. Because the ones we've lost come back to visit, and we want them to find us celebrating. 💜

Colombian Shakedown: An Evening of Community and Culture!

We are bringing our community together for a very special evening at Gladstone in support of earthquake relief efforts through S.O.S. Pacific Manos Visibles helping those affected by the earthquake in Chocó and Buenaventura.

Join us on Thursday, October 8th for an evening of food, music, culture, and community.

Starting at 4:00 PM, we will have our Burger + B**r Fundraiser and Silent Auction, with contributions from My Little Encanto, Island Pop Up Party, Mamacita Dance Fitness, Sharon’s All Sizes Boutique, Art by Carolina Fierrot, Lily Sn, CASA FUEGO Atlas Café and Salsa with Chris

At 6:00 PM, we’ll welcome Raíces Mestizas Collective for a traditional Colombian performance, followed by to keep the evening going.

Come out with your friends and family, enjoy some great food and local b**r, experience an evening of Colombian culture, and most importantly, support an important initiative from our local Colombian community.

At Casa Fuego, we believe Día de Mu***os is a homecoming 🧡

Long ago, the Mexica believed that when we die, our souls travel to Mictlán — the underworld — on a long and difficult journey. But once a year, the veil between worlds grows thin, and our loved ones make the trip back to visit us.

That's why we build ofrendas: to welcome them home with everything they loved. The cempasúchil lights their path, the copal smoke lifts our prayers, the veladoras keep the road bright, and the pan de mu**to waits warm on the altar.

Nothing on an ofrenda is random — every flower and flame has a meaning. Swipe through to learn the words of this beautiful tradition ✨

Every color tells a story. 🇲🇽

In Mexico, color is never just decoration — it's a language.

That vivid pink — rosa mexicano — is joy itself. It's the markets, the papel picado, Frida's world. The deep oranges and golds are cempasúchil, the marigolds that light the path for our loved ones on Día de Mu***os. Turquoise carries the Caribbean sea, cobalt blue echoes Talavera pottery, and warm yellow holds the cornfields under a bright sun.

And the heart? In Mexican folk art, the heart is everywhere — in milagros, in embroidery, in Frida's paintings. It's love made visible.

Each of these little hearts is embroidered by hand, stitch by stitch, carrying all of that color and meaning with it. No two are exactly alike — just like the hands and stories behind them.

A little piece of Mexico you can carry with you, wherever you go.

NANAIMO, CONECTAMOS! ✨

This past Friday I had the joy of assisting at the Networking Event en español alongside my friend Ana from SOMOS Comox Valley ❤️

What a beautiful reminder of why community is everything. As latinos building a life far from home, we need spaces where we can speak our language, share ideas, support each other's dreams and businesses, and just feel "en casa".

I loved meeting each and every one of you — new faces, new stories, new collaborations blooming. This is how we grow: juntos, apoyándonos.
