Come Walk Through the Wildflowers With Us 🦋🌿
There’s something magical happening in our field right now.
We haven’t planted neat rows of flowers or created a manicured pollinator garden. In fact, that’s exactly what we don’t want this place to become.
We’ve allowed this patch of land to grow wild, cutting only walking paths through it. In places, the wildflowers tower over your head. You don’t stand outside the landscape and look at it—you walk right through the middle of it.
And nature has responded.
Right now the ironweed is blooming, boneset is beginning to open, and we’re finding wingstem, goldenrod and other native plants throughout the field. Butterflies, bees and other pollinators are everywhere. Today I stood among the flowers and watched three or four Monarch butterflies moving through the patch, stopping to drink nectar along the way.
This is what we want people to experience on our Wildflower Walks.
Not a tour of a cultivated flower garden, but an opportunity to slow down and become immersed in a little piece of the natural world—to wander the paths, discover what’s blooming, notice the insects and pollinators that depend upon these plants, and perhaps see things you normally walk right past.
As I sat here by the West Chickamauga Creek making this post, a hummingbird flew in front of me, letting me know we’re on the right track. 😃
We’re planning three Wildflower Walks during September and October, beginning next Saturday. Each walk will be a little different because the field itself will be different. Flowers will fade, others will begin blooming, seeds will form, butterflies will come and go, and the landscape will gradually move from late summer into fall.
That’s part of the experience. Nature isn’t a display. It’s alive and continually changing.
If you’ve ever wanted to walk down a path with wildflowers over your head, butterflies fluttering through the field and bees working the blossoms all around you, we’d love to have you join us.
