I was not going to move the grow rack yet. I had only 4 more flats that still needed to germinate. I sat down looking at the rack while transplanting flowers. I decided it was time to break it down, and it needed to go. I used 2 metal shelves; I laid them across the work table. I put the heating pad across the top, then the 4 plant trays there under a hang light I can lower. This is a good feeling, cleaning the building out, as we get closer to its future. โค๐Ÿซ™

Today is the big day for the vine starter plants to go outside and harden off. I separated all the plants that have germinated. Watered them on the kitchen landing and brought to greenhouse area. I set them on black crates, covered them with a light mesh and a dark nylon covering. The UV rays early in the afternoon were supposed to be very high. With the reflected rays off the greenhouse, it will be worse. ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฅ’๐ŸŽƒ

My early morning job is to uncover the plants. Last night, I decided to cover them with plastic instead of using the sheer fabric. When I take the sheer fabric off the plants. It sometimes pulls plant tags out. I'm concerned about the hot pepper tags being pulled out. In past years, I would have stopped covering anything other than storm damage or new plants to harden off.
The deer ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿ˜•have become even worse this year. They are munching on so many plants around the buildings. The rose bush next to the hardening-off area on the other side is a patch of wild blackberry plants. This month, the deer found them and are eating all the new growth. My starter plants would make a perfect smorgasbord for the deer!
The herd of wild deer is causing significant problems this year. They are actively damaging numerous plants around the buildings.

Randall and I decided on Monday that we have too much to do on the farm. We have only the canned products to sell!

Working in the fields and planting for future produce is more important right now than attending the Viroqua Farmers Market. We look forward to seeing everyone next Saturday.

Today is a beautiful day! Compared to the past 2 days, those days were brutal outside, in the future kitchen, and in the fields. They took a lot out of these 2 old frats. Randall is mowing last year's garlic field for sweet corn. He sat for a while, resting, while I worked on transplanting the different varieties of celosia plants.

Looking forward to the crop, the shallots look the best they have in years. Fingers crossed we will have a crop for sale. We needed rain; with rain fronts the past 2 weeks or more, we have received around 2 inches of rain.

It's Sunday, and I decided to make an old-fashioned Sunday meal.
I started a ham roast with my Apple Barbecue Sauce, slow cooking in the oven early this afternoon. I'm making a focaccia bread loaf with elephant garlic greens to go along.

Today, Randall started planting our 2026 Onion Crop; here he is breaking the Alisa Craig onion bundles apart for planting. He is finished planting and watering the Sweet Alisa Craig onion plants. The next variety he is planting is Sweet Walla Walla onions.

๐Ÿง…Sweet Alisa Craig Onion: Well-known globe-shaped heirloom onion that can reach a huge size. The skin is pale yellow, and the flesh is sweet, juicy, and mildly pungent, so it is recommended for fresh use and should be stored only briefly. Introduced in 1887 by David Murray, gardener for the Marquis of Ailsa, at Culzean Castle in Maybole, South Ayrshire, Scotland.

๐Ÿง…Walla Walla onions are exceptionally sweet, crisp, and juicy with a uniquely mild, non-astringent flavor. Our soil is higher in sulfur than where the Walla Wallas are normally grown. Our are still sweet but do have a slight bite! Still an excellent choice for eating completely raw.

Yesterday, Randall tilled the east field patch he had tilled earlier this month. The wind, at least, is gentle compared to yesterday. The light seeds won't blow away while I try to plant. I hope the rains hold off or drizzle. I hope to start planting cold crops later today or tomorrow.

Bountiful Baskets Farm will be at the Viroqua Farmers Market tomorrow morning. Randall will have green elephant garlic and the last of the green garlic until next year. Since there is a chance of rain, we will only have our salsa available. I'm going to keep working on repotting seedlings.
