Honey bees collect water to keep the colony cool: water is brought into the hive, and through evaporation, this helps keep the temperature down. Water is also needed for feeding developing bees. Every bee collecting water usually makes about 50 trips, each time collecting about 25 mg of water. When there is not enough water in the hive, then foraging worker bees will quit foraging and help with water collection. During very hot summer days, a colony may need several liters of water per day. 💧🐝

It's all the buzz: Mysterious new honey stumped beekeepers

Interesting...

For thousands of years, humans have enjoyed eating honey produced by the humble honeybee. Recently, though, some beekeepers have started noticing something strange about the honey coming from their bee colonies. What began as a bad situation turned into something surprisingly good.

What do you do when you get home after a long day at work during swarm season? Catch a swarm, of course. If you see a clump of bees like this, please call or text us (with a picture) at 540-317-1170.

Swarming is the natural process by which a colony “reproduces” - one colony becomes two. As they begin to outgrow the space available in their colony the workers prepare new queen cells. Once those cells are capped the colony has the ‘green light’ to swarm. The initial queen and approx 1/2 the workers (females) and some drones (males) leave the colony and hang out (as pictured) temporarily nearby. Scout bees search for a new location to call home. When that’s found the cluster will release from their hang out and relocate. Ideally, beekeepers prefer to split the colony prior to swarming or capture the swarm and provide a new home before the scouts encourage the group to move on.

We're seeing Black Locust in bloom near the apiary. Just part of what makes Fern Hill Apiary honey so delicious!

This is the flower of the black locust tree (Robinia psuedoacacia). In our area it begins blooming in early May and produces extremely fragrant clusters of white flowers. This is one of the nectar sources that our girls stow away, eventually contributing to Fern Hill Apiary’s wildflower honey.

Food as a remedy! A member of our market management team picked up a stomach bug recently. Sabry from Sharkawi Farm offered this natural remedy made from ingredients that can be purchased at Market 🙂 Seems to have worked! Mint is great for nausea, oregano has antibacterial properties, sage is good for digestion, & thyme has been known to support immune health. You may have some local honey in your pantry from Fern Hill Apiary, Erin's Elderberries, St. Anthony Farm, Starstead Farm, or Off the Grid VA 🐝 Thank you, Sabry & everyone stay well!!! #foodismedicine #naturalremedy #stomachbug #stomachflu #staywell #knowyourfarmer #knowyourfarmerknowyourfood #foodsystems #eatlocal #functionalfood #northernvirginia #fauquiercounty #fauquiercountyva #warrentonva
