Recent study from Cornell University documented an extensive congregation of solitary bees living under the NY cemetery. (See pics in comments for more info. Despite the language in the original post, these are a different species than the honeybee, Apis mellifera.)

In a breathtaking discovery that has left entomologists stunned, an astonishing 5.5 million bees have been found living beneath the grounds of a New York State cemetery — a revelation confirmed in April 2026.

What was once a quiet resting place for the departed has quietly become home to what may be one of the largest and most extraordinary honeybee colonies ever recorded in an urban setting. For years, these incredible creatures have thrived undisturbed in the peaceful sanctuary of the cemetery, surrounded by abundant flowers and shielded from the chaos of city life.

This massive colony is more than just a scientific marvel — it’s a powerful reminder of nature’s remarkable resilience and ability to flourish in the most unexpected places. These tiny, tireless pollinators are now supporting the biodiversity of entire surrounding landscapes, silently working their magic in the heart of New York.
A story of hidden beauty, quiet strength, and the wonders that can bloom when we simply let nature be.

Just a reminder that we will not be at this week’s Farmers Market on May 9. Our next scheduled date is May 23. On May 23 we will also have heirloom plant starts for sale including Peg O’ My Heart, Sugerem Pembesi (slicing types), and Chocolate Pear (cherry type) tomatoes, plus tuberose flower plants (descendent from the gardens of Williamsburg).

We look forward to seeing you then and apologize for any inconvenience our absence this week may cause.

On Tuesday this week we got to spend another beautiful day sharing honeybee & beekeeping information with about 250 3rd graders from The Fauquier County Public Schools at the annual Conservation Field Day, organized by John Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District and in cooperation with the Fauquier Education Farm. We’re so glad to be part of this annual event.

Come visit us again at the Warrenton Farmers Market on Saturday 4/25 from 8-12. See you there!

This past Friday, we had the pleasure of participating in the Highland School‘s Earth Day Field Event, co-hosted by John Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District. Here, we (along with several other environmental experts) presented information about honeybees to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade science classes.

Come visit us again at the Warrenton Farmers Market; we’ll be there Saturday, 4/25!

Festooning is when bees link their legs together and hang in chains, and it usually shows up right before or during comb building. They’re measuring the space and setting the structure so the comb is built straight and efficient. It’s a really good sign the colony is actively growing and producing. (Video is at an apiary in FL, there’s no local source for orange blossom honey near us.)
